Cupping Therapy

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science

Cupping therapy involves the application of suction cups to the skin, promoting vasodilation, increased blood flow, and a localized inflammatory response that aids in muscle relaxation and tension relief. At Black Diamond Chiropractic and Sports Performance, we offer both traditional static cupping and dynamic cupping, which further refines the technique by incorporating cup movement, enhancing the therapeutic impact.

This therapeutic approach has gained widespread recognition in recent years, particularly after being showcased by Olympic athletes. However, its roots extend back thousands of years across multiple healing traditions. Today, we integrate cupping with modern understanding of physiology and tissue healing for optimal results.

How Cupping Therapy Works

Cupping therapy creates a vacuum or negative pressure on the skin’s surface, which produces several therapeutic effects:

Decompression Effect

The treatment lifts and separates tissue layers, creating space between skin, fascia, and muscle. This decompression effect reverses the compression that often contributes to pain and allows restricted tissues to move more freely. Patients often describe an immediate sensation of relief as tissues are decompressed.

Circulatory Enhancement

Cupping draws fresh blood to the treated area and improves oxygen delivery to tissues. It enhances the removal of metabolic waste products and reduces congestion in muscles and fascia. This improved circulation is a key factor in the healing process and helps explain the rapid relief many patients experience.

Inflammatory Response

The therapy triggers a controlled therapeutic inflammatory response, stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This promotes tissue repair and remodeling while accelerating the breakdown of adhesions and scar tissue. Unlike chronic inflammation which can damage tissues, this therapeutic inflammation is short-lived and beneficial.

Our Cupping Techniques

At Black Diamond Chiropractic and Sports Performance, we offer two primary cupping approaches:

Static Cupping

In static cupping, cups remain in one position for 5-15 minutes, creating a deeper decompression effect. This technique is excellent for specific problem areas and trigger points. Static cupping may leave circular marks that fade within 2-7 days, a normal response that indicates areas where stagnation was drawn to the surface.

Dynamic Cupping

Dynamic cupping involves moving the cups across the skin while maintaining suction, combining the benefits of cupping with myofascial release. This technique covers larger areas and entire muscle groups, often resulting in less marking while maintaining therapeutic benefits. Dynamic cupping is particularly effective for addressing fascial restrictions and enhancing movement patterns.

What To Expect During Treatment

Before Treatment

Dr. Higgins will assess your condition to determine if cupping is appropriate and which technique will be most beneficial for your specific needs.

During Your Session

The treatment area will be exposed and a light oil may be applied to facilitate cup movement. We use specialized cups made of silicone, plastic, or glass depending on the treatment area and goals.

For static cupping, suction is created in the cup, which is then placed on your skin. Multiple cups may be placed across the treatment area and remain in place for 5-15 minutes.

For dynamic cupping, cups are placed on the skin and then gently moved along muscle groups. The motion is smooth and controlled, often following specific patterns, and treatment lasts approximately 5-10 minutes per area.

After Treatment

Circular marks (cupping marks) may appear in treated areas. It’s important to understand that these marks are not bruises but represent areas where stagnation was drawn to the surface. Marking typically fades within 2-7 days. Most patients experience immediate relief of muscle tension and improved mobility. Staying well-hydrated after treatment enhances the benefits.

Benefits of Cupping Therapy

Pain Relief

Cupping therapy reduces myofascial pain and trigger points while alleviating tension headaches. It decreases back and neck pain, lessens joint discomfort, and addresses sports-related soreness. Many patients report significant pain reduction after just one session, with continued improvement following subsequent treatments.

Enhanced Recovery

Athletes benefit from accelerated post-exercise recovery and reduced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Cupping improves tissue healing after injuries and speeds removal of metabolic waste from intense training. This enhanced recovery helps athletes train more frequently and effectively, improving overall performance.

Improved Function

Treatment increases range of motion and enhances flexibility throughout the body. It improves kinetic chain function, optimizes movement patterns, and supports better posture. These functional improvements often translate to better athletic performance and more comfortable daily activities.

General Wellness

Beyond its physical benefits, cupping promotes relaxation and stress reduction. Many patients report improved sleep quality following treatment. The therapy supports immune function, enhances overall circulation, and complements other wellness practices for a holistic approach to health.

Conditions That Respond Well to Cupping

Cupping therapy is particularly effective for a variety of conditions including back and neck tension, shoulder pain and restricted mobility, IT band syndrome, and quadriceps and hamstring tightness. It supports athletic recovery and helps manage conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Some practitioners also use it for respiratory conditions. It’s beneficial for general muscle tension and soreness regardless of cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the marks from cupping painful?

The marks from cupping are generally not painful. They represent areas where circulation has been enhanced and stagnation drawn to the surface. They are not bruises in the traditional sense, as they are not caused by trauma. Most patients report that the skin in these areas feels normal to the touch, even when the marking is quite visible.
